How is UHMWPE made?

UHMWPE is synthesized by building long molecules of ethylene. These molecules are several orders of magnitude longer than those of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), due to a synthesis process based on metallocene catalysts.

This results in UHMWPE molecules typically having 100,000 to 250,000 monomer units per molecule each compared to HDPE's 700 to 1,800 monomers.

UHMWPE is processed by various techniques that include compression moulding, ram extrusion, gel spinning, and sintering. UHMWPE has been processed since the early 1960s and it was originally manufactured for different applications.

The manufacturing procedure used for UHMWPE today was done later in the late twentieth century in part due to favourable materials properties.
